Dr. Charbel is a nationally and
internationally recognized leader in the field of
Neurosurgery who specializes in the surgical treatment
of aneurysms, the diagnosis and management of stroke and
ischemic cerebrovascular disease, complex intracranial
and skull base tumors, spine tumors and a variety of
other neurosurgical problems.
An inventor and entrepreneur, Dr.
Charbel has been awarded multiple patents and honors,
including the UIC 2002 inventor of the year award. His
discoveries are in use worldwide.
Dr. Charbel earned his medical
degree in 1984 from St. Joseph’s University in Beirut,
Lebanon. He began his Neurosurgical Residency at Henry
Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and completed his
Chief Residency at the University of Illinois at
Chicago.
Dr. Charbel is a past president of
the World Association of Lebanese Neurosurgerons,
current president of the Chicago Neurological Society
(2005) and a director of the Societe de Neurochirurgie
de Langue Francaise (1999-2005). He is a member of
numerous professional societies including the American
Academy of Neurological Surgeons, American Association
of Neurological Surgeons, American College of Surgeons,
American Medical Association, Chicago Medical Society,
Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Illinois
Neurosurgical Society, Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers/Society of Engineering in Medicine
and Biology, Institute of Medicine of Chicago,
Neurosurgical Society of America, Society of Critical
Care Medicine and the Society of Neurological Surgeons.
He is Professor and Head of the
Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois
at Chicago. |
